The adventurers are about to enter the cave the Shadow Knight disappeared into, not far below the Cheery Dragon.
Fresh scrapes are all around the entrance—from man-bats rushing in—which quickly narrows to a tight, pitch-black squeeze.
The party has Ryviin and Tamarin crawl forward with a sunrod cloaked in Ryviin’s sleeve until it looks like a dim light.
Ryviin stealthily navigates through the cave, discovering unconscious man-bats scattered around, recently beat up.
He comes to a point where man-bat screeches and grunts can be heard more audibly and also detects creatures lurking in the darkness.
Tamarin rushes forward and looses the sunrod to light the cavern.
It looks unstable, with rubble located all around and pebbles occasionally falling from the roof
Man-bats infest the area, but seem mostly focused on a figure in the back of the room.
The Shadow Knight (SK) is in back; he knocks another man-bat unconscious and calls out to the players to help. “I’m running out of time.”
SK rushes out of the room with several man-bats in tow.
The remaining bats focus on the adventurers.
The new party, being inexperienced with each other, test new techniques and ways of working with one another.
Memorable combat moments:
Ryviin pulls off a spectacular leap onto a stalactite to gain ground to a flying man-bat and uses his sword mastery to draw the man-bat into the reach of the other party
Raithe attacks one of the weak rocky pillars to trigger a rockslide but the area of effect is much bigger than he bargained for, killing some man-bats but also injuring his friends.
Tamarin comes to Raithe’s rescue when a shadowy man-bat lurking in the darkness suddenly appears and bites into Raithe. Though Raithe’s tiefling body erupts in flames and injures the man-bat, it holds tight, and it isn’t until Tamarin leaps in and smashes the man-bat that it actually lets go. A flurry of blows later and the shadowy bat was already nearly dead.
The party, at a milestone, is given the option of an action point or 0-min. short rest and chooses the latter so they can pursue the Shadow Knight.
Wood and steel seem to poke directly out of the cave rock, and lead to an strange new area.
Chains and Ryviin know they are entering the inside of the Titan.
Dim glass bulbs with swirling magic in them, some broken
Master iron and woodwork craftsmanship
The wood is utterly smooth to the touch
Crunching of glass accompanies occasional footfalls
Strange magic bleeds from glass pipes
There is a strange, slow, almost imperceptible back and forth echoing noise, almost as though the place were breathing
Mist flows along floor
They run through the corridors the only way they can—most exits are blocked
They come to a more-intact room.
Pillars, working gears, mechanical devices along walls
Trail of man-bats lead towards end of this large room, and look like they are taking on mutations as they get nearer the end.
Shadow Knight is fighting last man-bat near a strange device.
Device almost looks like an organ, but with mechanical contraptions and magic swirling through it.
Device has a glass cylinder on it.
SK has fist around a glowing object—some type of mineral that seems to be disintegrating in his hands.
SK punches man-bat with fist and it staggers backward, its face seems to catch become twisted from contacting the mineral.
SK places the mineral in the glass cylinder at the base of the organ-like machine and it begins to swirl and glow. A glass sphere encapsulates SK as the man-bat mutates into a Large, grotesque beast with legs and wings flopping around, mouths separating, and teeth jutting out at weird angles, but clearly growing stronger.
SK begs party to help activate the machine somehow.
Arcarius jumps to his aid, using Arcana to activate parts of the machine.
The rest of the party confronts the beast. Highlights:
The beast takes a flying leap across the arena, slashes at the party and screeches, causing the air around the party to glimmer with magic before it bursts into draining magic and slows down Ryviin. It’s might is extremely intimidating. It nearly knocks party members unconscious several times over.
Chains does an amazing job keeping the monster debuffed, prone, and stuck to him.
Raife also severely debuffs the enemy, keeping it from attacking effectively.
Ryviin, constantly near the edge of death bravely keeps assaulting the beast, delivering tons of damage over and over again, chipping away at its flesh.
Arcarius, after helping activate magical equipment with his Arcana, swings in at the last minute to claim glory, vaulting with his spear into the room and impaling the beast through its mouth to its feet.
The fight ends with half the party bloodied.
“Thank you, warriors.”
“I don’t know who you are, but I don’t have time to…”
“Would you help Gotham if it needed you?”
“This ambush means the alchemist Ender Andtrom is repossessed, and may have found a way to transform all of Gotham into these creatures.”
“Please help me stop them.”
“Take this to the caves beneath Kane Manor and find Red.”
“Explain what happened here.”
“And defend Gotham.”
“I pray you have the…
Looks at Arcarius: "honor…
“To keep Gotham safe.”
“Because I don’t know when I’ll be back.”
Ryviin: "Do you have the “devotion” to save Gotham, or just the odd scum from falling off a cliff?"
To himself aloud, in amazement, “Knight must have been so stressed to throw you the keys.”
Reveals SK’s key
Mutters, “I have half a mind to take that candy from you…”
Closes fist over key as he looks at party
“But this is much more entertainment than I could have ever concocted.”
Reveals empty hand
“Here you go kids…
Menacingly, “A head start.”
Outside of Gotham looking in… see Kane manor… and a huge explosion.
